Time Over Money

Redefining Retirement Through Slow Travel

About

About The Book

What if retirement wasn’t an end, but a beginning?

Time Over Money is part memoir and part practical roadmap for anyone ready to trade hustle culture for a slower, more meaningful life abroad, for less than you would spend living at home.

Are you ready to rethink everything you’ve been told about success and aging, and allow yourself to envision a retirement that includes dancing with your newfound family in the hills of Nepal or finally learning to dive in Bali? This “radical idea” isn’t about escaping life; it’s about embracing it fully.

Through stories from my own journey (extreme downsizing, choosing freedom over worry, and realizing that even my budget can still afford me an extraordinary life,) I present you a different way forward. One where time is your greatest resource, the one thing you can’t buy back even with all the retirement funds in the world.

If you’ve ever wondered whether there’s more waiting for you beyond the nine-to-five or knuckling though until 65 to actually break free, this book will help you explore options you may have thought were beyond your reach.

Excerpts

What can you expect to read in the chapters?

Shine On, You Crazy Glimmer

Randy and I were walking back to our volunteer farm stay on a country road in southern France. Summer was winding down and we had just been for a refreshing dip in the nearby river. I was wearing just my bathing suit and flip-flops, the golden light was dappled on the road, and I didn’t have a care in the world. I made Randy stop for a moment so I could close my eyes, take a deep breath and recall what it felt like to be a kid again. It had been decades since I’d felt so free.

Have you ever felt joy sneak up on you for no obvious reason — a flash of contentment while sipping your morning coffee, or a sense of awe seeing a beautiful bird? That’s a glimmer.

Being Set Free

It wasn’t a surprise, but it still made my heart jump. I put my hand over my chest and took a deep breath.

The email which popped up in my inbox was inviting me to a meeting in the Human Resources office. My gut already knew what it meant. The amazing job I’d dedicated 20 years to was about to give me something back: a severance package and an awkward goodbye party.

I sat in my car in the parking lot for a while after the meeting, absorbing this massive change in my life. The paperwork was sitting beside me on the passenger seat. There was no sadness or panic. Not even anger.

What I felt, surprising to some perhaps, was elation.

This One Is For The Toe-Dippers

I get it — you’re emotionally ready to jump into your car and drive to the airport. However, your life isn’t aligned with your escape plans just yet. Perhaps you have to get out of debt first or settle your living situation out. There are a lot of moving parts to line up before taking that big leap into the deep end.

And, let’s be honest here, maybe your biggest fear is that you aren’t up for it. You need to find a way to prove to yourself that you’re making the right decision.

Which begs the question — what if you could take a test drive of this exciting new lifestyle? Try it on for size without fully committing?
